Recently, you likely received a nasty, anonymous attack email claiming that I haven’t been honest about my background. This kind of dirty politics within our party is not only distasteful, but it’s not our values or why I am a member of the Democratic party.

So here’s the truth:

I’ve never hid from my background and am happy to discuss these issues with anyone and everyone. And my good friend Senator Martin Heinrich certainly didn’t get tricked. In fact, I wrote an op-ed last year about my support for Hillary Clinton that was published all across New Mexico, that says exactly why my thinking — and my politics — have changed:

“For the majority of my life I was a Republican. This November, I’m voting for Hillary Clinton.

“My political shift over the past few years is not something that I take lightly. In fact, it was one of the hardest transitions of my adult life. Growing up, I was always proud to be a Republican. I was proud that I came from the party of Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. I was proud that a core part of my party’s platform was conservation, progressive reform, and social justice.

“But that party I knew and loved is nowhere to be found these days. It has – by and large – been hijacked by opportunists, radical ideologues, hucksters, narcissists and special interest shills masquerading as “conservatives.”

I hope you’ll take time to read the whole piece.

It’s a shame that this race has already taken a negative turn, because there’s so much at stake. I’m running a campaign based on the depth of our merits and on an ambitious platform for change, not a bunch of made up falsehoods against my opponents within the Democratic Party.

We’ve never had a land commissioner who will tap the permanent fund for early childhood education — I will help get that done.

We’ve never had a land commissioner who will make a massive, game-changing investment in solar and wind energy production — I will make sure this is a priority. Sadly, we are currently ranked 48th in the nation in renewable energy production. This is simply unacceptable.

We’ve never had a land commissioner who will utilize our state’s vast trust lands for recreation and enjoyment — I will make this a reality.

So if that sounds good to you, I’d appreciate your support. You can always call me at (505)738-3546 or email at

The truth matters and I was always taught that we don’t eat our own. But it already seems as though my opponents don’t share this fundamental value.

Thank you for taking the time to learn the truth.
